Travel insurance is a usual-overlooked item when planning a trip.  We are always confident that everything will go smoothly in our travels. If it doesn’t, we complain to the customer service representative or escalate it to the manager without considering that it was not in scope of what we paid for.  It’s a good idea to have travel insurance in case something goes wrong. World Nomads provides travel insurance to travelers from over 140 countries.

Why do you need travel insurance?

You will never know when your trip will be extended.

Last January 12,  Mike was flying back to the US after our vacation in Cebu,  Siquijor, and Dumaguete.  After I dropped him to the airport to check-in for his flight, I spent the rest of the night chillaxing on my bed.

If you are not yet familiar with our story,  Mike and I are in a long-distance relationship even after our wedding. I only visit him in the US once a year.  He is the one who always visits me in the Philippines.

I was browsing through my social media feeds when I received a call from an unknown number.  When I answered the call, it was Mike calling using an airline representative’s phone.

He informed me that his flight was canceled due to low visibility because of the ashfall from the Taal Volcano. I immediately jumped out of my bed, picked up my car keys and rushed to my car only to find it covered with ashes. That was surprising when it was just an hour that has passed after I dropped Mike at the airport.

The airport was busy when I picked him up.  As soon as we arrived home, I called the airline hotline to rebook his flight.  After being in queue for 30 minutes, I was able to talk to a representative but the earliest date that we can book his flight was on January 15.

Rebooking his flight was free as it was the airlines who canceled his flight.  He also did not have to pay for a hotel stay as we will be staying in my home.  Even though his extended stay did not cost him much because he has a place to go, it would have been a different story if it happened in a different city or country.

If you are delayed en route to or from your trip depending on your policy, travel insurance got you covered.

You will never know when your trip will be canceled.

Mike and I were supposed to go to Puerto Rico for a dragon boat race two weeks after he went to the Philippines. The race organizers confirmed that the race was a go even after a series of high magnitude earthquakes during the first week of January since the race venue has no damages.

During Mike’s extended stay in the Philippines, the organizers finally decided to cancel the race. We were given another headache after the other.  Our Puerto Rico trip has been set.  We have booked and paid for Mike’s flight, Airbnb in Ponce and San Juan, car rental, and tours.  Good thing that we have not booked my flight yet so that’s one thing we did not have to worry about.

Mike’s flight was non-rebookable and non-refundable.  We were lucky that the airline gave him a full refund as a one-time consideration due to the unforeseen event in Puerto Rico.

Our Airbnb stays only charged a small fee for canceling the booking but the car rentals and tour costs were fully refunded to us.

If the airlines would have followed their cancellation policy, Mike might be eating his ticket.

If something like this will happen to you, depending on your policy, travel insurance will cover your trip cancellation.
