Our honeymoon in French Polynesia should have been our first vacation as a newlywed couple. Mike and I have been in a long-distance relationship. He stays in the US; I stay in the Philippines. Since we had our wedding in Manila Philippines, we went to El Nido Palawan before our flight to the US.

Read all the things you need to know when planning a trip to El Nido here.

How to pick a honeymoon destination?

Mike and I picked a honeymoon destination based on the following:

A honeymoon destination will be a place where both or any of us had never visited

I have travelled to Europe for a dragon boat race and Palau for a solo trip. On the other hand, Mike has travelled to Hawaii a couple of times so Europe, Palau, and Hawaii were crossed off the list.

When Mike and I can’t decide on a honeymoon destination yet, we were already sure that it should be our first time to travel to that place.

Our honeymoon vacation will be a place outside of Asia

Bali and Maldives are top Asian honeymoon destinations but because we agreed to go outside of Asia, these places were removed from our list.

The trip will be to a tropical place

Mike and I decided that a beach honeymoon destination is the best in the world.

Who decides the honeymoon destination?

As a couple, Mike and I decided on our honeymoon destination. We have shortlisted our honeymoon destination between Tahiti and Fiji.

We kept on researching by asking around where to go on our honeymoon until Mike was able to find an article about Moorea. Moorea is an island near Tahiti. We both liked Moorea right away, but there is also a promising and popular honeymoon destination called Bora Bora.

That’s when we found out that these island destinations are all in French Polynesia. Having several interesting travel spots, Mike and I decided that our honeymoon will be in French Polynesia.

Where is French Polynesia located?

French Polynesia is a set of islands located in the South Pacific. Tahiti and the other French Polynesia islands are halfway between California and Australia on the map.

Tahiti and Bora Bora are the commonly known French Polynesia islands. I think it is because international flights to French Polynesia arrive in Tahiti. Moreover, most people refer to French Polynesia when they say Tahiti.

Not known to many, a trip to French Polynesia has more to offer than just Tahiti. After reading this post, you will be convinced that a honeymoon in French Polynesia is one of the best decisions you will make.

What to expect for a honeymoon in French Polynesia?

We will tell you right ahead that a vacation to French Polynesia is not cheap but as they always say, you get what you pay for. Depending on your origin, flights to Tahiti International Airport can be between $600 to $3,000. A stay in those luxurious overwater bungalows that excites you whenever you see on Instagram starts at $600 per night for 2 persons.

Mike and I usually travel on a budget but our honeymoon in French Polynesia, we decided that we will spoil ourselves. During our honeymoon, we enjoy waking up every morning in our overwater bungalow. That immeasurable feeling you get after sliding the glass doors of our overwater bungalow and get welcomed by the fresh breeze of the ocean is memorable. We were living a dream!

A few steps from the balcony door, we have our access to the pristine waters of French Polynesia that are rich with marine life. Mike and I either snorkel or fancy drinking our coffee in the balcony and just staring at the horizon.

Rainbow after our lagoon tour

Before we start touring around, we will fill in our tummy with the best French Polynesian cuisines for breakfast then we will prepare to burn those calories. Some of the famous tours are snorkelling in lagoons and mountain hiking.

When you go for your honeymoon in French Polynesia, we would recommend that you book your tours directly to the operator to save a few bucks. A commission is added to the tour price when offered by someone else.

Polynesian tour guides speak your language which I find very convenient. I remember during our tours, the guide provided the introductions and reminders in three languages.

How much does it cost for a honeymoon in French Polynesia?

Our French Polynesia package price for a 5-day honeymoon in Moorea was at $7,432.17. This travel package includes the following for 2 persons:

  • Roundtrip flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to Tahiti
  • Tahiti Airport to Tahiti Ferry Dock roundtrip shared van transfer

  • 5-night stay in an Overwater Bungalow in Sofitel Moorea
  • Daily Breakfast
  • One Complimentary Lunch
  • Daily City Tax

Tours and other expenses are not included in the package.

What is the best time of year to go to French Polynesia?

The climate in French Polynesia is tropically hot and humid so the best times to visit Tahiti are during the dry season from May to October. Outside of this period, the island experiences heavy rain but is still warm even during wintertime.

Check out below on how airfare drops on the low season in French Polynesia. Click on a month to book the cheapest flight.

The French Polynesia islands

Tahiti is the largest French Polynesia island. If seen from above, the island is shaped like a turtle or an 8-figure due to two extinct volcanoes connected by an isthmus. Tahiti Nui is the larger volcano located in the western section while Tahiti Iti is in the eastern section.

Because of Tahiti’s fine beaches, turquoise lagoons, and waterfalls, it became a popular honeymoon destination around the world. In Tahiti, couples can snorkel a famous wreck spot that has 1 plane and 2 boat wrecks along with rich tropical marine life. You may also visit the archaeological sites, grottoes, and a lighthouse to step back in history then relax at the lovely of the black sand beach of Tahiti.

You can also explore the waters of Tahiti at the White Valley dive site and see species like the tiger shark, lemon shark, nurse shark, grey reef shark, white tip reef shark, and the blacktip reef shark. Although the sightings of tiger sharks are not guaranteed outside August to November.

The best place for honeymooners to stay is the InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa. Nestled in a lavish tropical garden and clear turquoise lagoon, the InterContinental Tahiti Resort is the best place to stay in French Polynesia.

Enjoy luxurious rooms that have a private bathroom with a bathtub and your balcony with grand views of the volcanic peaks of Moorea. InterContinental Tahiti Resort is a hotel in French Polynesia with overwater bungalows that offer a private sun terrace with direct lagoon access.

Bora Bora

Bora Bora is the star of French Polynesia. It is one of the ultimate travel bucket lists that everyone aspires to achieve in their lifetime. Most couples choose Bora Bora to spend their honeymoon in French Polynesia. Bora Bora is a romantic island of white-sand beaches surrounded by crystal-clear waters that are perfect to celebrate the special moment of your marital bliss.

To go to Bora Bora, you will take a 50-minute flight from Tahiti or Moorea. The island is located on a dormant volcano island that is northwest of Tahiti. Mount Otemanu, the tallest point in Bora Bora, rests at the center of this 15 square mile island.

The best place for honeymooners to stay is the Conrad Bora Bora Nui that is located in an exclusive cove on Motu To’opua and a 20-minute boat ride from Bora Bora Airport. Surrounded by blue waters and a white-sand beach, this resort in French Polynesia offers luxurious floating villas with a private infinity plunge pool on the deck with direct access to the lagoon.

You can experience boat tours or snorkelling with sharks, stingrays, and tropical fish swimming the coral gardens in the aquamarine waters of Bora Bora. Alternatively, you can appreciate the turquoise lagoon from several lookouts by riding a 4WD truck or from the summit of Mount Popoti by riding an ATV. Due to its popularity, Bora Bora is touristy and more expensive to stay compared to other French Polynesia islands.

Moorea, which means “Yellow Lizard”, is the heart-shaped island that is a 30-minute ferry ride from Tahiti. If you are looking for a honeymoon destination in French Polynesia that is less touristy than Bora Bora, Moorea is the best choice!

Boasting its charming white sand beaches and dramatic views of its crystal lagoon, couples will enjoy water activities in Moorea. Like other French Polynesia islands, the famous tours in Moorea are swimming with the stingray and motu (tiny islet) picnics. Moorea’s unique landscape gave its reputation for being one of the best islands in French Polynesia for both land and water adventures.

One of the famous spots in Moorea is the Belvedere Lookout that will give you the picturesque view of Mount Rotui mounting in the middle of the Cook Bay and the Opunohu Bay. These two bays carved the heart shape of Tahiti’s little sister, Moorea. Another popular activity is hiking the Magic Mountain if you want a 360 panoramic view of Moorea.

If you want an intimate activity with the locals, book My Polynesian Life tour. This tour will teach you how to paddle an outrigger canoe, catch a fish, and prepare it for your lunch.

The best place for honeymooners to stay is in Sofitel Moorea la Ora Beach Resort, a resort that is a 5-minute drive from the airport. Sofitel Moorea is one of the best places to stay in French Polynesia with overwater bungalows. The resort has a fine white sand beach with a silhouette of Tahiti Island above its crystal lagoon.
