1. Riviera Maya, Mexico

Contributed by Isabella of JourneyHero Travel

A romantic getaway to a small resort on the Riviera Maya near Cancun, Mexico is the best vacation spot for couples in the world. Cancun is fun, exciting, and loud but the Riviera Maya is calm, spiritual, and offers an opportunity for you to reconnect with your partner.

You can relax, play, and remember exactly what attracted you to each other! 2020 has been a difficult year for all of us and taking the time to remind your partner of their importance in your life allows for the special renewal of your bonds.

Why Riviera Maya?

The Riviera Maya is within the state of Quintana Roo on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula and traditionally is located between Playa Del Carmen and Tulum. Many of the resorts there are smaller properties that are Rainforest Alliance Certified to be sustainable for the environment. I highly recommend that you select a resort that is eco-friendly so you can enjoy yourself without guilt about the impact on the environment.

The Riviera Maya is about 50km (31 miles) south of Cancun International Airport, a modern and convenient facility which is easily navigated. Most resorts offer a VIP “meet and greet” service that includes assistance through immigration along with a baggage service and transport via a luxury vehicle during the short trip to your selected resort.

Here’s a Pro-tip:

The currency of Mexico is the Peso and there are currently 27 pesos to the GB£. The rate typically fluctuates between 25-30 pesos to the Pound. It is best to use a cash machine in the airport to have a little currency. Most places will take US dollars but few will accept UK Pounds as payment.

Where to stay in Riviera Maya

I don’t usually endorse a single property, but as I’m advising on the perfect couples’ holiday, I’ll make an exception. When visiting the Riviera Maya, you’ll want a small venue that provides impeccable service, is stylish and comfortable. I know of none better than Zoëtry’s Paraiso de la Bonita! This property has just one hundred suites that all face the sea and each offers a different theme celebrating the materials, textures, and aromas of Oriental, Hindu, Balinese, Mexican, Mediterranean, Caribbean, and African traditions. This is a wonderful and achingly romantic property!

Paraiso de la Bonita has a Thalassotherapy Spa, which I love. Based on the healing properties of the ocean, this seawater spa offers many different treatments that will wrap you in a sense of well-being as you luxuriate with your partner in relaxing bliss! Try a couples massage or enjoy the healing properties of a saltwater bath infused with perfumed oils and strewn with flower petals.

The main reason for taking a couples holiday is to rekindle the romance within each other’s hearts. Here are some activities that may help:

Relaxing in the sun
  • There is the obvious of relaxing in the sun by the pool or on the pristine white sand beaches of the Riviera Maya. Spend time chatting about your plans, hopes, dreams and desires.
Cenotes Tour
  • Experience a Cenotes Tour. The Cenotes are underground limestone pools of fresh water that are arranged in a semicircle on the land in the Yucatan Peninsula. The Cenotes are geological remnants of the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous Period. They were also mystical realms to the Mayan natives of the region who left offerings to their gods in these crystal clear, life-giving waters.
Temazcal
  • Try the Temazcal “sweat lodge” rites. This hour-long ritual with heated stones, steamed herbs, and story-telling simulates the birth experience and you emerge after sunset, with your partner by your side, to view a heavenly constellation of stars that will seem to shine ever more brightly!
Catamaran Cruise
  • Take a Catamaran Cruise in the warm waters of the Caribbean. The waters around the Riviera Maya are especially calm because of the protection of the nearby island of Cozumel. A “cat cruise” will allow you to swim, dive or snorkel in warm and stunningly clear azure waters!
Romantic Lunch
  • Have a Lazy and Romantic Lunch on the beach. The resort’s staff will layout a sensual feast for you with fine china and glassware where you can taste exotic flavours and wonderful aromas as you dip your feet in the warm Caribbean waters. I recommend copious amounts of bubbles to produce a lasting memory of peace and indulgence!
Tequilas and Mezcals
  • Take a lesson while tasting Tequilas and Mezcals. The indigenous spirits of Mexico are delicate and offer extraordinary flavour variations. The resort offers tasting sessions with experts and, trust me, the experience will really mellow your mood!
Games
  • Play Games in the bar at night. The intimate bar has a cool patio where you can enjoy beverages of your choice while playing board games or just chatting.

You’ll love the food in the Riviera Maya. World-class chefs combine fresh local seafood with delicate spices to make exquisite combinations that will satisfy anyone’s palette. Excellent wine pairings will also enhance your meal – as will a cocktail or two before! These will all add to your wonderful experience as sound of the gentle surf lapping against the shore will calm even the most stressed!

My most important advice, however, is this…

You should not need a holiday to let your partner know of your love. Your actions every day should wrap your partner in a comfortable cloak of your love and respect. Occasionally, however, you should escape on a couple’s retreat where you rekindle your romance. You will share memories that will last your lifetimes!

The Riviera Maya is one of the most romantic and relaxing places on the earth! I hope you enjoy it as much as we always do!

2. Waikiki, Hawaii, USA

Contributed by Sue of Journey-Junkies.com

Perfect for Two

Waikiki is a classic couple’s destination. Despite having one foot planted firmly in the present, it retains a romantic retro vibe which echoes back to another era in travel. With its white sandy beaches, turquoise ocean, swaying palm trees and mai tais galore, Waikiki is as close to paradise as it gets. If you can tear yourself away from the beach, there are an abundance of great restaurants to try and other fun things to do in one of the most glamorous seaside cities in the world.

Beyond the Beach

Diamond Head is a volcanic tuff cone that overlooks the city. Hiking up to Diamond Head Crater is worth the effort – from the summit, there are stunning panoramic views of the surrounding ocean and city below.

For a glimpse into Hawaii’s underwater world, check out Waikiki Aquarium, where you can view colorful native fish, turtles, and Hawaiian monk seals. Just a stone’s throw away from the aquarium, Honolulu Zoo is divided into three main sections – the African Savannah, Tropical Forests and Pacific Islands and is home to over 250 animals.

Shopping is another favorite activity of many visitors to Waikiki. There are certainly plenty of opportunities from the numerous gift shops to the upmarket Royal Hawaiian Center and the vast Ala Moana Mall.

Other attractions include the USS Arizona Memorial, which offers a moving insight into the Pearl Harbor attack, snorkelling at the coral reefs of Hanauma Bay, and the Bishop Museum which focuses on the lives of the ancient Hawaiians.

Duke’s Barefoot Bar

When it comes to dining, you can’t beat Duke’s Barefoot Bar which is located right on the beach. From the pupus (Hawaiian snacks) to the fresh fish or cheeseburgers, the food is locally sourced and delicious. Don’t forget to try the local speciality, Hula Pie, for dessert. There is often a live band playing to accompany lunch and dinner.

The Royal Hawaiian Hotel

The historic Royal Hawaiian is the most iconic hotel in Waikiki. If you are looking for a combination of luxury and romance, this elegant hotel will deliver it in buckets. The pink hotel has been the backdrop for many a TV show and movie and has a traditional ambience. Even if you don’t stay there, it is worth a visit to the Mai Tai Bar to sample a cocktail or two and soak up the old-world atmosphere of Hawaii’s most charismatic hotel.

An Insider’s Tip – The Kuhio Beach Hula Show

To truly encapsulate the aloha spirit, don’t miss the free Kuhio Beach Hula Show. Taking place several times a week, it’s a magical combination of Hawaiian music and Hula dancing. As the sun sinks over the Pacific Ocean, the beachside torches are lit and a conch shell is blown to mark its beginning. The audience sits on a grassy knoll to enjoy the show and revel in the unique Hawaiian vibe.

When to go to Waikiki

The weather in Waikiki is good year-round. It is, however, at its warmest and driest between May and November.

3. Westfjords, Norway

Contributed by Matt of Walk Wild

If you’re a couple looking for some adventure, where better to go than Norway? The Westfjords are known for having some of the most beautiful hikes in the world!

Start your trip by booking a flight to the gorgeous fishing village of Bergen. Spend an evening strolling along the multicolored waterfront of Hanseviertel Bryggen. Be sure to sample some of the fresh seafood in the fish market – the lobster roll is spectacular.

If you have the energy go on a quick but steep walk to Fløyen, the mountain that overlooks Bergen. If you don’t fancy walking down, you can always hop on the Fløibanen, a mountainside funicular!

The following morning you can either embark on a cruise of the Westfjords or hop on a bus inland to the small town of Odda. From here follow the sheer hiking trail to the incredible rock feature of Trolltunga – the Troll’s Tongue. The walk is long and difficult, so I recommend camping when you get to the top. That way you can watch the sunset over the mountains and avoid any crowds in the evening. Wild camping is encouraged in Norway so there’s no better place to stay than in nature itself!

4. Venice, Italy

Contributed by Stefan of Berkeley Square Barbarian

Friends of ours who hear us talk about Venice and how we think it is the most romantic place on earth, mostly think we are crazy. Nearly all of them visited during the main holiday season and remember Venice as an annoyingly loud, smelly, unfriendly place, completely overrun by ruthless hordes of camera-swinging, elbowing tourists.

And they are not wrong.

Neither are we. It all depends on timing your visit right. Every time of the year outside the main holiday seasons will be pleasant. Summer should be avoided altogether. Unclear about the time of the various main seasons? Just check the hotel prices, they are a great indicator.

Mask Balls

Our preferred time to visit is during the carnival season around the first two weeks of February when everyone dresses up in beautiful costumes and all the mask balls are taking place. It is not for everyone, as temperatures can drop near freezing point. Moreover, it is not exactly low-season. The first two weekends are much better than the last.

The mask balls worth attending, if you are looking for the real thing, start at €300 per person. This includes a multi-course, luxurious dinner, but next to no drinks, no costume rental, no hair, make-up, or anything else. Especially wealthy locals spend very large multiple on their mask ball experience. We attended the event at the five-star Baglioni hotel, which was on the cheaper end but absolutely fabulous.

Row Venice

During our last visit I also took a rowing lesson with Row Venice (€85) to learn how to row Venetian style. The boats you are being trained on are the boats that kept the town afloat before motorboats nearly led to their demise. They are bigger than the tourist gondolas.

However, you still stand on a platform on the back of the boat. Your partner is sitting on a bench, enjoying the views along the quiet canals, far away from busy Saint Mark’s. Hopefully, he or she will be admiring your new-found skills or at least be forgiving about the lack thereof. We did switch positions, but truth be told, Ellie, my wife, and fellow blogger, gave up quickly, as she found it was not for her.

Where to eat in Venice

Sunday brunch is usually our favourite meal of the week, but what to do in a country like Italy that thinks of breakfast as an espresso and a piece of pastry. Answer: you pick a five-star American boutique hotel right next to Canale Grande: Palazzina Grassi. No need to stay overnight. For €65 per person we had perhaps the best brunch ever: seven courses involving a lot of seafood.

As soon as the Covid crisis is over, we will be on another plane to Marco Polo Airport. Most likely we will stay at our usual haunt, three-star Hotel Bisanzio (from €100 per night for a double), 5 minutes from Saint Mark’s.

5. Lisbon. Portugal

Contributed by Stuart of Just Travelling Through

Lisbon is a city that has everything. The Portuguese capital is one of the most popular cities in Europe, not to mention one of the most beautiful. So, no matter how you enjoy spending time with your partner, you’ll find something in Lisbon.

For a view of Lisbon head to the Santa Justa Lift, which has an observation deck overlooking the city centre. Alternatively, Parque Eduardo VII to the North-West looks down towards the River Tagus and is a great spot to sit.

Parque Eduardo VII

You can spend hours getting lost amongst the narrow, twisting maze of ancient streets in the Alfama district until you arrive at Castelo de São Jorge.

Bars and restaurants

A few minutes from here is Bairro Alto, another area with tight lanes as well as many bars. Most of which are barely large enough for more than five people and a fun area for a night out.

Locals drink Ginjinha, a type of liqueur (usually fruit flavoured) served as a shot. For the best way to try it ask for the cherry flavour served in an edible chocolate cup.

Lisbon has many amazing restaurants that won’t break the bank with ‘Bacalhau’ (cod), a local specialty. Once the sun sets, a romantic stroll along the River Tagus is the perfect way to relax after your evening meal.

Sports and hiking

Sport is a big part of the culture in Portugal and Lisbon has two of the biggest football teams in the country. Tours are available at both Benfica’s Stadium of Light and Sporting Lisbon’s Estadio Jose Alvalade, although attending a match is the best way to really soak up the electric atmosphere created by the passionate locals.

If you enjoy hiking then just outside the city, you’ll find many spots for getting active with some nice walks in the beautiful countryside, while an hour away by train is the picturesque town of Sintra. Here you can stroll through the forested hills, take a break in one of the small cafes or visit the Moorish palace.

The shoulder seasons of spring or autumn are the best time to visit Lisbon with good weather and fewer crowds. This often means cheaper rates at hotels and no wait to find a table in otherwise busy restaurants.

6. Oaxaca, Mexico

Contributed by Franco Magno

Traveling is not simply an act of moving to other places on the
planet. It is expressing the freedom of oneself.

It is the moment to realize the desire to go beyond to conquer spaces, experiences, and learn everything that complements our existence.

Traveling as a couple is not exclusive to reaching that freedom. On the contrary, it is the perfect opportunity to mingle with your partner’s soul to experience unique, sweet, and harmonious moments that will enhance the love between partners.

Throughout the world, idyllic places that offer unique experiences to live that intense love as a couple can be found everywhere. Traditional places that enchant the senses such as Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific islands allow us to experience and live differently travel moments.

We also have very good options in the Caribbean islands and Latin
American countries on the American continent. This fact makes Mexico stand out. With more than 11,122 km of coastline, Mexico offers an extensive and wide range of cultural, historical, and beach destinations that delight the senses of all those couples who want to live their life to the fullest.

Why visit Oaxaca

On Mexico’s southwestern coast, Oaxaca’s state has stood out in recent years for being the perfect escape for all those who love each other.

Besides offering destinations privileged by nature, this region of
Mexico also offers a good deal of excellent lodging. Here we find one of the destinations that year after year enchants travelers from all over the world, the Bahías de Huatulco.

Bahías de Huatulco

This wonderful destination of the Mexican southwest coast that looks at the Pacific Ocean consists of nine bays that enchant travelers and lovers’ senses. Bahías de Huatulco offers the perfect showcase for privacy and those sweet experiences that only lovers know how to live.

Hotel and lodging options of a high international level could not be absent in Mexico. One of those magnificent representatives of the hotel industry in Oaxaca is right here, in the city and port of Bahías de Huatulco.

Aerial View of Bahías de Huatulco

The great Secrets Huatulco of the Amresorts group will be a very
good starting point to get fascinated with all the beauty that
Oaxaca’s state has to offer.

Located in the remote “Bahía de Conejos,” it offers a range of
high-quality services, so you don’t have to worry about anything. Its
restaurants are showcases for world-class tasting menus.

It also has a spa that exceeds the limits of comfort. It also offers
within its facilities the perfect space to celebrate weddings, and why not? Complement your honeymoon with water activities that the resort itself organizes.

The activities that are not to be missed in Bahías de Huatulco are, for example, taking the tour in a catamaran that goes around the nine bays of Huatulco.

What to do in Oaxaca

One of the stops that this tour makes is in “Bahía Maguey,” where you can taste a fantastic and exquisite meal with dishes of Mexican and
Oaxaca’s state cuisine with a natural frame that catches the breath of any traveler.

Likewise, the exploration and sighting of marine fauna, which in this
part of the Mexican Pacific Ocean finds a home full of resources, is
another activity that is especially enjoyable here.

On the other hand, in the season that goes from November to
mid-December and until March, you can watch gray whales in Oaxaca’s
state waters.

Additionally, you can visit the large spaces filled with exuberant
tropical flora and fauna in the national park of Bahías de Huatulco,
which offers a virgin beach, the “Cacaluta” beach, which is a micro
paradise to fulfill romantic fantasies.

I especially recommend renting an ATR vehicle or SUV to explore the
tropical roads that give away postcards in divine colors.

Where to eat in Oaxaca

On the other hand, to please the palate in Huatulco, we have excellent
culinary options in the hands of excellent restaurants such as
“Nixtamal,” “Ocean Huatulco,” and “Maré.”

Over there, we find exquisite dishes of delicious Mexican and Oaxaca’s
state cuisine in a safe, hygienic, and pleasant environment.

When to go to Oaxaca

Throughout the whole year, Bahías de Huatulco enjoys a privileged climate.

This fact allows visitors from the United States of America, Canada,
and Europe to start leaving the traditional Mexican circuits of
first-line tourism such as Cancún and Los Cabos to discover the coast
of the State of Oaxaca. The state of Oaxaca does not lack at all in satisfying the desires of demanding travelers.

One more recommendation. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore a
little further than Bahías de Huatulco. On the coast of Oaxaca, we
also have excellent destinations such as “San Agustinillo,”
“Zipolite,” and “Mazunte,” which also offer options and travel
experiences designed for couples.

Without a doubt, Bahías de Huatulco and the nearby towns that make up
the coast of the state of Oaxaca are micro paradises for all those in
love.

It’s a fantastic opportunity to find themselves in love and find
themselves in soul and spirit and to meet each other completely
because Mexico is a permanent destination of charm for those in love
and for all those who want to find themselves in beautiful spaces.

7. Vienna, Austria

Contributed by Rich of RJOnTour

If Carlsberg made romantic cities, they would have created Vienna but the Habsburgs beat them to it. Vienna is the capital city of Austria and is blessed with some fantastic architecture. On a promenade through the city, the sights make for an interesting walk.

For a more relaxed sightseeing tour head to the domineering St. Stephens Cathedral. Once at the cathedral you can hire a horse and trap for two with your driver to see the city.

Cafes and restaurants are plenty serving some great Viennese food. I recommend booking in advance to secure the best Lunch and Dinner spots. For food try the Wiener Schnitzel a delicious version of the dish.

As the sun is dipping in Vienna the romance of the funfair is not far away at Pratter. Pratter is a historic and fun amusement park which is home to the cities iconic giant Ferris wheel. Enjoy a meal out or a nice drink here while enjoying the ride and views of the park. There are loads of rides here, some high, some fast and some outright terrifying.

Four couples not into the theme park thing a walk along the blue Danube is a great option, much like in the movie “Before Sunrise”. Music and dance is an option here, opera classical music and even seeing the famous Viennese Waltz.

There is something for every type of couple in Vienna. Austria.

8. Niagara Falls, Canada

Contributed by JoJo’s Cup of Mocha

In 2018, my boyfriend and I went to Niagara Falls, Canada. Niagara Falls is such a beautiful location to visit as a couple!

There’s a variety of entertainment in the area, wonderful restaurants, and activities to participate in, and not to mention the amazing view of the falls. It’s such an iconic destination couples need to visit at least once in their life.

My boyfriend and I did a lot of activities together in Niagara Falls. Some activities I’d recommend is going on the boat cruise to the falls, Cave of the Winds where you explore the caves underneath the falls, The Niagara SkyWheel at night, mini-golfing, the Fallsview Casino Resort, and Clifton Hill with all its activities and shops.

Although the best time to go is during the summer or peak season, I’d also recommend traveling to Niagara Falls during the fall season as well. The weather is cooler, yet a little cold at times, with fewer people and cheaper prices.

When it comes to food, there’s no shortage of cuisines. There’s a wide variety of food from classic Italian cuisines to the Mediterranean, Tim Hortons, American dishes, to the famous Hard Rock Café and so much more!

Finally, the hotel we stayed at, The Embassy Suites by Hilton Niagara Falls, was a lovely hotel! Not only was it wonderful to stay in but it was close to the attractions and locations mentioned earlier! With everything within walking distance from the hotel, coupled with the amazing options and attractions nearby, Niagara Falls is a must for traveling couples.

Conclusion

And that’s it! We hope that you and your partner will have a good time to any of these romantic vacation spots!
